After reaching the round of 16 at the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2023, Kim Jung-ho has a new challenge on his plate. It’s called card management.
Kim Eun-joong, 44, and the South Korea U-20 team played to a 0-0 draw against Gambia in their third Group F match of the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup on Monday (June 29) at the Mendoza Stadium in Argentina. The two teams, who have already qualified for the Round of 16, were not overly aggressive in the early stages of the match, but traded counterattacks in the second half. The two teams exchanged 23 shots on goal.
SBS commentator Lee Hwang-jae, who was in charge of the game, expressed his disappointment with the Korean team. He was disappointed that Lee received a yellow card for an unnecessary foul.
Lee Seung-jun (FC Seoul), who was substituted in the second half of the game, was unable to avoid the opponent and collided with the defense. The referee showed Lee Seung-jun a yellow card. Commentator Lee Hwang-jae expressed his disappointment, saying, “A yellow card for such a foul is a waste.”
South Korea received a yellow card in each of their three group games. One each against France and Gambia, and five yellows and one red in the second game against Honduras.
According to FIFA U-20 World Cup rules, a player who accumulates two yellow cards in two different matches is ineligible for the next match. Unlike Kim Jun-hong (accumulated cautions) and Choi Seok-hyun (sent off), who have already served their punishment, Park Chang-woo, Cho Young-kwang, and Lee Seung-joon will receive accumulated cautions if they receive more yellow cards in the Round of 16. The yellow cards will not be removed until after the quarterfinals. 메이저놀이터
With a 21-man squad, it is crucial for Korea to contain the power leakage at the tournament. In the Gambia game on Monday, we had already qualified for the round of 16, so we were able to rotate freely, but this tournament is different. Excluding the goalkeeper, there are only 18 field players. South Korea even has 17, as Park Seung-ho (Incheon) is out with an injury. This makes yellow cards even more sensitive.
Going into the tournament, Kim Eun-jung-ho will need to be more careful with his card management if he wants to reach the next level.
