ESPN reported on a three-way trade between the Memphis Grizzlies, Boston Celtics, and Washington Wizards on Feb. 22.
Initially, Boston, Washington, and the Clippers were considered in the Kristaps Porzingis-centered triangle trade report. However, during negotiations, the Clippers pulled out of the deal due to doubts about Malcolm Brogdon’s health.
The triangle trade with the Clippers fell through, but Boston and Washington found another partner and quickly moved forward with trade talks. In exchange for Porzingis, Boston would receive Smart and Brogdon.
Here’s how the trade went down. Kristaps Porzingis goes to Boston, which sends Marcus Smart to Memphis and Danilo Gallinari and Mike Muscala to Washington. Memphis sends Tyrese Jones to Washington and two first-round picks to Boston.

Smart is a one-club man who has played for one team since being selected by Boston with the sixth overall pick in the 2014 draft. His departure is a bit of a shock, as he’s been so loyal to his team that he’s even dyed his hair green and worn it on the court.
Boston will now have a big man with scoring ability and height in Porzingis, as planned. Smart’s departure is unfortunate, but the Celtics can afford to let him go because they have Brogdon and Derrick White.
Headed to Washington, Tyrese Jones is a low-turnover, reliable type of guard. He is expected to receive a larger role than he did in Memphis with Morant.
