Ahead of the new season, Manchester United heralded an active transfer window. Having shown promise with a modestly successful 2022-23 campaign and targeting the league and European titles in the new season, the Red Devils were keen to bolster their squad. The goalkeeping position, left vacant by David de Gea, is also close to being filled. Inter Milan’s Onana is the main man. The former Ajax standout joined the Nerazzurri for the 2022-23 season and quickly established himself as a starter. He led the team with his reliable build-ups and saves, including a man-of-the-match performance in the UEFA Champions League (UCL) final against Manchester City.
Now, a year later, he’s been linked with a move. United had considered parting ways with De Gea and had identified Onana as his replacement. Manager Eric ten Hagg was keen to reunite with Onana, who was a regular at Ajax. Negotiations were slow but steady, and on Aug. 18, the British public broadcaster BBC broke the story of Onana’s transfer. “Manchester United have reached an agreement with Inter Milan to sign Onana for £47.2 million,” the outlet reported.
The news was quickly updated. European soccer transfer market expert Fabrizio Romano posted on social media on the 18th: “Onana will be heading to Manchester United. The plan is finalized! He will land at 7pm UK time. A medical and contract will be finalized on Wednesday. The contract runs until 2028 with a one-year option to extend.”
Onana was later spotted at Milan Airport. “Onana has been spotted at Milan airport as he prepares to fly to England for a Man United medical,” Sky Sports reported. Onana was wearing a beige short-sleeved tee as he exited the car and entered Milan airport to catch a flight to England.
